So what’s all this craziness about?
Well, that question is answered by another question: How can I combine the things I love - doing good, entrepreneurship, traveling?
So, at 2am one night while battling these thoughts for sleep, I turned on the light and birthed Friendly Planet - a blog about doing good, exploring the world, and good business.
Let’s go 50/50
Here’s the deal - As I travel, I will donate 50% of this blog’s revenues to non-profits, charities, foundations, stranded travelers, or needing souls that I stumble across. The other 50% will fund travel expenses and student loan payments. You in?
The Win-Win-Win (It’s the new Win-Win)
- You, the readers, win - First, you’ll get some (hopefully) good reading material. And every time you stop by Friendly Planet or click on an ad from the sponsors, you’ll be giving to a charity or needing soul halfway around the world without even grabbing your wallet. So cool and so easy, huh?
- Non-profits win - I don’t know a non-profit or charity that doesn’t need a little extra money. So hopefully, with our powers combined, we can drop a check each month that is greatly needed and well-deserved.
- I win - I’ll get to share some cool stories, highlight some good companies and organizations, and earn a little extra money to keep me on the road.
What Are These Revenues You’re Talking About?
Transparency and honesty are of utmost importance. I’ll tell you exactly how much money Friendly Planet brings in each month and show you the checks, cash, or reciepts of donations made. FP makes money (currently) in two ways:
First, I place Google Ads on the site. When viewers like you click on them, this site receives a small amount of money (between $0.01 and $1). 50% goes to the giving fund. 50% goes to student loans and hiring a yak.
Second, I place Affiliate Links on the site. Affiliate links are links to buy a product - a book from Amazon, an ebook from other bloggers, or services such as web hosting. If a purchase is made, this site receives a commission percentage (usually between 3% and 30%). I will only endorse affiliates that I wholeheartedly believe in and have read or used with great satisfaction.
What’s Happening on Friendly Planet
Since I’ve never been able to quite focus on just one thing, this blog will naturally not focus on just one thing. Things I do intend to talk about are:
- Travel stories, experiences and reflections on this wonderful world
- Profiles of cool people and companies making this planet friendlier
- Travel tips - including travel fitness, finance, how-tos, my mistakes
- Musings on balancing one’s self
- [this space reserved for random]
Friendly Planet-eers
Most of you are way smarter and much better at writing than myself. So, I welcome guest bloggers and value the diversity of views and opinions. If you’re up to it and you think your writing pertains to some of the topics covered - traveling, being friendly, etc - feel free to send me an email, I’ll read your stuff, and if there are no objections I’ll get it posted. Thoughtful and well-edited posts are greatly appreciated.
